Knives are a very personal thing to most people. I guess that explains why there are so many to choose from – something for everyone. Just spend one day at “The Blade Show” and your head will be spinning from the many choices available.

So when I was looking for my field knife solution, I knew it would be pretty easy to end up with around four knives that do four things really well. But my field pack is not insignificant in weight – around 30 lbs without a rifle – so multiple knives could be that proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back (or possibly mine). Also, I have an uncanny ability to come home with one less item than I left with, so a highly used item like my knife has fallen into that category more than once. Finding one that could do multiple things modestly well and at a reasonable price (limiting the gnashing of teeth if/when I lost it) was my goal.

Given my pack weight concerns and multi-tasking criteria, I narrowed it down to several 4”-6” fixed blade knives and then, after throwing value/price into the mix, I ended up with the Gerber LMF II.

The first deciding point for me was quality. The Gerber brand offers a history of battle tested ruggedness. One look at the LMF II and you can see that the designers understood what this knife needed to do and needed to do well.

Next was the feel and fit of the knife. I was looking for something that had a heft to it, felt balanced in my hand, and one that I could also wield defensively should the need arise. This Gerber is just under 11” overall length and has a solid tang that nicely counterbalances the 5” blade. A bonus is the rubberized over-mold on the grip that has a tactile feel. I’ve found that it even seems to get a little “tackier” in damp situations – rain, mist, etc. Gerber also claims the grip acts as an electrical insulator (that’s one feature I have not tested-and hope to never get the opportunity to test!).

The other features that sweetened the deal for me were the three lashing holes for improvised spear construction and the chisel-faced butt cap. So now I have a pry/impact tool. And the clincher was not even a feature of the actual knife; it was a feature of the sheath. After about three days of heavy field use, the blade can become dull and carrying a sharpening kit with my field gear is going in the wrong direction on pack weight. The LMF II comes with a sturdy MOLLE compatible sheath that quickly transforms to a belt carry option and has its own pull-through plain-edge sharpener hidden beneath the Velcro – how convenient is that?

For me this one knife (w/sheath) can efficiently stand in for multiple tools and do each task remarkably well. In selecting a field knife, the Gerber LMF II represents a great value.
