This is the 2nd generation of the “man bag” with a purpose. In my review of the Fatboy, I mentioned that our illustrious EM Gear leader jumped right in with EDC via a Fatboy. But it was not very long (about 6 months later) that he made the switch to the Jumbo. The Fatboy to Jumbo transition seems to be a pretty common progression for people who utilize a cross-shoulder Versipack for concealed carry – especially those carrying full-frame weapons. My recommendation is, if you can think it through the first time, you might want to opt for the Jumbo right at the start and save the transition step – not saying that having a Fatboy and a Jumbo doesn’t also have its upsides.

But overall the Jumbo design has become the most popular Versipack we sell. It has all the basic features of the Fatboy (read Fatboy review) but the designers took what might be considered downsides of the Fatboy and have found ways to improve upon them in the Jumbo. For most people and several of our staff, it is the right-sized bag for everyday concealed carry.

Here’s a list of notable features of the Fatboy:
  • Same cross-shoulder hip-located Versipack features of the Fatboy (Regular and S-type options)
  • Upgrades over the Fatboy
    • Concealed carry pocket (CCP) can fit up to a full sized 1911 (and your hand)
    • Zipper pocket located on top is perfect for everyday, frequently-accessed items such as glasses, hand sanitizer, note pad, energy bar, etc.
    • The 20 oz water bottle pocket is very utilitarian AND it’s cool how it tucks away with a bungeed Velcro strap to provide a sleeker profiled bag when the pocket’s not in use
    • Both front panel areas are in PALS webbing (same in Regular and S-type) – I’ve found these areas are perfectly sized for add-ons. Three Maxpedition accessories that fit this space well are: Universal Cell Phone Holder, Three by Five, and Barnacle
Notes of Interest
  • Since the Jumbo’s CCP is larger, most weapons need a Universal CCW to keep the pistol in ready-position – without it your pistol can rotate or shift in the pocket making for an interesting draw situation when you grab the barrel instead of the grip
  • You can carry on the opposite hip but the quick release clip will end up in middle of your back – if this is your choice, I’d recommend covering the quick release with a strip of wide elastic to hide the clip
  • The concealed carry pocket is still not a quick draw but it is readily accessible and a really resourceful way to have your hand in ready-position without drawing attention
  • I’d definitely recommend changing the zipper pull on the CCP for this bag to something more substantial as the paracord loop that comes on the bag can be difficult to locate in a hurry

Manufacturer’s Description:

The JUMBO Versipack fulfills the multitude of requests for (1) a larger Fatboy with more bells and whistles, and (2) an effective concealed carry system utilizing the Fatboy shoulder sling concept.

The JUMBO's main compartment is over 38% larger than the Fatboy. In addition, it has three zippered accessory pockets, two sleeve pockets, and one drawstring pocket fitted for a 32oz/1L Nalgene water bottle or a radio. The Jumbo has three places for modular expansion with other Maxpedition accessories using Malice clips. External keyper on shoulder strap for gloves and internal silent keyper for keys.

The JUMBO's rear slip compartment is now equipped with large loop Velcro patches to accommodate our Hook & Loop Modular Accessories (e.g. Universal Modular Holster, sold separately). This allows the user to position their concealed carry firearm for a quick strong side draw or weak side cross draw.
