The Colossus is the Papa Bear in the Maxpedition hip-carry Versipack trilogy. It’s the newest addition to the line added in response to the market’s request for “I want a bigger Versipack – I have a lot of stuff”. Our customer response has shown that it is very quickly becoming another popular cross-shoulder carry bag - from the Hunter to the Traveler to the Active Mom (no joke – this bag makes a great easy-access kid stuff/diaper bag). Its unique design is more squared than the Fatboy or Jumbo and the main body is also very well padded. For EM Gear staff, we’ve frequently used it for audio/video equipment – it’s great for organizing and protecting our media equipment while we’re on the go.

Here’s a list of notable features of the Fatboy:
  • It has the same basic cross-shoulder Versipack features as the Fatboy (read Fatboy review) and the Jumbo (read Jumbo review) – BUT with the bulkier shape the designers were able to make it ambidextrous so no need to consider left or right hip draw
  • Upgrades over Fatboy/Jumbo:
    • It has two (count ‘em .. two) Velcro paneled conceal carry pockets – large enough to hold a full-sized weapon in one pocket and spare pistol mags (optional - using a triple or a dual mag holder) in the other pocket. OR should you desire… it can hold two weapons
    • The square design affords lots of real estate for PALS webbing = lots of add-ons = carry even more stuff
  • There is an ingenious pocket divider that turns the front pocket from one big pocket into two distinct pockets with a flip of some Velcro
  • The main compartment has a zippered top-access opening that flips away from your body - making this a great bag for working out of while wearing it or when on the move
Notes of Interest
  • Living up to its name, it’s pretty big for a hip carry bag – there is no sleek profile going on here
  • We’ve heard good feedback from hunters who wanted to get a small amount of gear, a reasonable amount of ammo, and also - most importantly - snacks, for the intensive hunt to come, off their backs (replacing their backpacks). The Colossus allowed them to have easy access to their stuff but still be able to push it out of the way to climb a tree stand or shoulder a rifle while still kitted up.

The frontal compartment features an additional lower zipper opening to access items at the bottom. Beaucoup attachment points line both exterior sides while rear and back sleeve compartments both contain 7” x 8” loop fields for CCW accessories allowing users to carry a handgun or three.
