We frequently get asked about the gear that we use so we have decided to do a series
of articles on the site profiling some of the gear we carry. Keep in mind that what
we use is designed for our needs. With the range of gear available there are many
opportunities to customize your kit to match your application.
Grab n' Go Ammo Bag
The goal was to set up a kit that would serve as an emergency grab bag to support
one or two people with basic rifle supplies. The bag should hold a minimum of (24)
30 round magazines, first aid kit, spare parts, cleaning kit refills and emergency
caching supplies.
Given the total loaded weight of the kit at 31 pounds we needed something really
strong. With the intended use being primarily an emergency situation we needed absolute
reliability from the gear. Spec Ops builds some of the toughest products we have
tested and their patented Battle Buckles hold incredible weight.
We chose the Spec Ops Brand Modular Combat
Bandoleer (M.C.B.) as the base platform along with four (4) Spec Ops
X-6 Mag Pouches, one (1) X-4 Mag
Pouch and one (1) Medium Medical
Pouch.
The X-6 Mag Pouches each hold, you guessed it, six (6) 30 round magazines. The tan
X-4 Mag Pouch works perfectly for a spare bolt carrier group or two in an aLokSak
and additional small springs and other parts are stored in the small Pelican 1010
Case.
On the opposite side of the bag we have two (2) more X-6 pouches along with the
Medium Medical Pouch marked clearly with a red strap. We keep basic trauma supplies
inside – gauze, triangular bandage, sutures, ammonia, CAT tourniquet and chest decompression
needle. Not in this picture but also stored in the kit are nasal airways and Quikclot.
The M.C.B. has a nice size center pocket that we use for some additional supplies.
We keep an aLokSak with OTIS cleaning patches, a spare flexible rod and weapon cleaner/lube.
A full size 12”x44” aLokSak is inside which will fit two rifles and pistols with
a water tight seal. We also keep two contractor-type heavy duty trash bags along
with duct tape in case we need to cache some gear.
Keep in mind the application of the bag is extra support ammo and supplies. This
set up is not designed to fight directly from although the flexibility of the M.C.B.
certainly would allow you to set it up that way.
Our primary medical kits and other gear are mounted on the armor carriers (that
is for a future article).
This bag serves its purpose well and sees a fair bit of range time. We keep all
of our mags loaded with defensive ammo marked with red tape so we can pull out the
mags and carry training ammo to the range along with spare parts and a first aid
kit.
